Dr. Simonini completed his undergraduate psychology work at Randolph-Macon College. Upon acceptance as an Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Student, he attended graduate school in clinical psychology at the University of South Florida and completed his Ph.D. in Professional Psychology with Clinical Psychology Specialization in San Diego at United States International University. Previous to this he completed his internship with the Orange County (California) Department of Mental Health which was affiliated with the University of California at Irvine. His post-doctoral residency was completed at David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center (Travis Air Force Base) in Fairfield, California. Dr. Simonini later finished a one year post-graduate certification training program in cognitive-behavioral therapy with the Atlanta Center for Cognitive Therapy and Georgia State University in 1994. In addition, he has completed certification trainings at the Institute for Rational Emotive Therapy in New York and graduate courses in applied behavior analysis at George Mason University.

Dr. Simonini has practiced in outpatient and inpatient clinics and hospitals and has held several supervisory and consultant positions with various organizations. He taught undergraduate and graduate psychology courses at Chapman College (now Chapman University) in California. Since coming to Virginia, Dr. Simonini has been an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine where he has supervised psychiatric residents and presented seminars in cognitive behavioral therapy. He has also clinically supervised pre-doctoral and post-doctoral psychology students in Virginia and elsewhere. In addition, he was selected to participate on the NIMH clinical research panel as a cognitive behavioral therapist for a multi-site research study (STAR*D) on the treatment of depression in 2003-2004. While practicing with a variety of perspectives which include psychodynamic and family systems approaches, his primary theoretical and therapeutic orientation is cognitive-behavioral in nature. Dr. Simonini is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and maintains a certificate on the National Register of Health Care Providers in Psychology. He is interested in treating a variety of adolescent and adult problems including anxiety and depressive disorders as well as those who are dually diagnosed. In addition, Dr. Simonini has an interest in working with stress and adjustment problems associated with personal relationships and with the workplace.
